The second-generation Camaro was not a significant departure from the original pony-car βlong hood, short deck” styling template, but Chevrolet’s styling department delivered one of the most beautifully balanced and tastefully detailed designs ever created by the American car industry. And while there was a surfeit of horsepower amongst the Big Three, few contemporary muscle cars possessed that race-ready vibe like the new Camaro in high-performance trim did. The 1971 Camaros showed subtle but significant changes that included new exterior emblems, new high-back bucket seats, a new steering wheel, and softer interior surfaces for increased passenger safety.
This SS396 is one of only 1,533 produced with the LS3 engine option in 1971, a number that represents a scant 1.3 percent of total production that year. Like the 1970 Chevrolet big-blocks, this car’s LS3 engine displaced 402 CI from the factory, but its SS396 badges served to retain brand continuity. Packed with a forged crank, a torque-inducing hydraulic cam, a 4 barrel carb on an aluminum intake and dual exhaust, the LS3 was rated at 300 HP at 4,800 RPM and 400 lb-ft of torque at 3,200 RPM when new and stock, retaining impressive performance despite the move to lower compression ratios. Front disc brakes maximizing handling. The car’s Mulsanne Blue paint, front and rear spoilers, color-keyed mirrors and BF Goodrich Radial T/As on Argent 5-spoke steel wheels establish its track-ready appearance.
